The Wild Ride of Small Business Ownership

That’s me at High Park in the ‘80s, shrieking and giggling along my eventful journey.

For the past 12 years, I’ve also been shrieking and/or giggling daily since launching my own small business.

🎉 Since October is Small Business Month, and Small Business Week runs in Canada today through October 25, it’s time to celebrate the courage and creativity of small business owners.

Entrepreneurship = Evolution

Never thought I had what it takes to own my own business (otherwise I would have paid attention during my Entrepreneurship and Management Accounting classes).

I felt too introverted and intimidated to ever hang my own shingle.

People change. I felt uncharacteristically nudged to go for it when I realized: Life’s too short; take the risk.

It paid off.

🌍 I’ve gotten to serve the most incredible clients across 4 continents
😱 The shrieking during the overwhelming startup phase simmered as I hit a stride
🤣 The giggling increased as exhilarating triumphs compounded (clients’ successful launches, awards, landing big deals)

Come to think of it, I haven’t bought lottery tickets for >12 years because I feel like I’ve already won the freedom, flexibility and creativity I’ve always craved.

🥂 Cheers to Small Business

Little Lisa on the slide at High Park would be so proud of the (still little) Lisa of 2025 for taking the wild ride of small business ownership.

Today I’m grateful for all the small business owners who gave me the hope, tips and encouragement to get this far.

From the charming shops that are the soul of our communities to the brands and service providers who fill a niche big players can’t replicate, thank you for showing me what’s possible.
