Dads are the GOATs of Sports

❤️ Missing this dreamboat today.

Sports was our love language.

This Father’s Day I’m remembering how our quality time was spent in the pool, playing tennis or taking long bike rides.

He played semi-professional soccer, taught me to swim and attended all my gymnastics performances.

📺 On Saturday nights in the ‘80s, we’d watch Hockey Night in Canada at our neighbours’ house.

🥤 We’d feast on Hostess barbecue chips and Diet Pepsi
🍺 The dads would sip Molson Export while cheering for the Leafs
⚽ During the 2006 World Cup, he teared up when I surprised him with Shevchenko’s Team Ukraine jersey

Even in his final months, we made cherished sports memories:

🥇 We cheered wildly when Sidney Crosby’s goal won gold in men’s hockey at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics

🇿🇦 We watched FIFA World Cup 2010 games, hosted by South Africa, on the hospital’s TV while debating the accurate pronunciation of ‘vuvuzela’

Sports brought us together.

That’s why it’s heartwarming to see sports bringing more families and communities together, as investment rises and new leagues emerge, including women’s teams.

Even in a tight economy, retailers, brands and media that tap into our passion for and emotional connection with sports will triumph.

Happy Father’s Day to all who celebrate.
